What is a brace?
A brace is a diagonal tube that stops a scaffold racking — moving out of square under load or wind. Bracing is what turns a rectangular grid of standards, ledgers and transoms into a rigid structure.

</figure>A grid of verticals and horizontals is a set of rectangles, and a rectangle folds. A diagonal across it cannot change length without the tube itself stretching or crushing, so it holds the shape. That is the entire job of a brace, and it is why removing one is more serious than it looks.
There are several kinds and they do different jobs. Facade bracing runs diagonally across the outer face and resists movement along the scaffold. Ledger bracing sits across the width, between the inner and outer standards, and resists the scaffold folding sideways. Plan bracing lies in the horizontal plane and keeps the scaffold square when seen from above.
Bracing patterns are a design matter. How much, where, and at what angle depends on the height, the loading, the sheeting and the ties — which is why they are set by the compliance sheet or the bespoke design rather than decided on site.
What goes wrong on site
- Taking a brace out to get access or to let a delivery through and putting it back later, or not at all. This is the alteration most likely to be missed at the next inspection.
- Braces coupled to boards, guard rails or anything other than the structural members they are meant to connect.
- Assuming a scaffold that feels solid is adequately braced — racking shows up under wind and load, not when you push it by hand.
