What is a scaffold register?
A scaffold register is the record of every scaffold on a site or a contract, with its status, its inspection dates and the documents behind it. It is what a client or an inspector asks for first.
A register answers the question nobody can answer from memory on a job with twenty structures: what is standing, what is due, and what can be used. It is the index to everything else — the certificates, the compliance sheets, the inspection reports.
Registers are traditionally kept in a spreadsheet, which works until two people maintain it, or until the structure that matters is the one somebody forgot to add.
The useful version is not a separate document at all. If every structure carries its own status, dates and paperwork, the register is a view of those records rather than a second place where the same facts are typed again and then diverge.
What goes wrong on site
- A register maintained separately from the inspection records, so the two disagree about what is overdue.
- Structures added at handover but never removed at strike, so the register lists scaffolds that came down months ago.
- One register per site kept by the site team and another in the office.
