Estimating from a site visit and a memory of the last job like it is how a price drifts from the scaffold that actually gets built. When the material list falls out of the model, the quote is priced against the structure rather than against an impression of it — and the yard loads the same list the client was charged for.
A price that cannot quietly be wrong
Rates live on a rate card rather than in each estimator's head, and VAT is set and frozen on the quote itself so a later rate change cannot rewrite history. A line the system cannot price says so and blocks the quote, which is a better outcome than a zero nobody noticed.
