Temporary roofs and heritage

Scaffolding software for temporary roofs and heritage work.

Structures that left the compliance sheet behind, and a designer who has to be on the record.

Temporary roofs, heritage scaffolds, truss-outs and bridge work have one thing in common: they stopped being coverable by a compliance sheet the moment the load path stopped being ordinary. A roof carries wind. A truss-out carries itself from a facade. A heritage scaffold ties into fabric that is protected and fragile at the same time.

That means a competent designer is not an escalation, it is the starting position. The design exists before the job does, the structure is built to it, and the single most important record on the whole job is which design it was built to — because that is the question that gets asked after any incident, often years later.

Heritage adds a second constraint that has nothing to do with engineering. The building is protected, consent governs what you may fix to it, and a tie pattern that would be unremarkable on a 1970s office may be unacceptable on a listed facade. The design has to satisfy the structure and the consent at once.

The records

What temporary roof and heritage work are answerable for

  • Project and site register, with every structure on each
  • The bespoke design each structure was built to, recorded against it
  • Quotes from the material list the design produced
  • Handover certificates and tag status per structure
  • Routine, post-alteration and post-weather inspection records
  • CISRS card, medical and training expiry per operative

The problem

What makes this hard for temporary roof and heritage work

  • The design comes first, and must stay findable

These structures exist because a designer specified them. Which design a structure was built to is the record that matters most, and it is the one most likely to be a PDF in somebody's email.

  • Weather is a live input

A sheeted roof behaves completely differently in wind from the open structure underneath it, and post-weather inspection stops being routine administration.

  • Consent constrains the engineering

On a protected building, what you may fix to the fabric is a planning and conservation question as much as a structural one, and the two have to be satisfied together.

  • Long-duration structures

A temporary roof may stand for a year or more. Over that period inspections accumulate, operatives change, and the original design is a long way back in the file.

  • Pricing something you have not built before

Heritage and roof work is close to bespoke every time, so a rate card and a reliable material list matter more than on repeatable facade work, not less.

The answer

How ScaffoldOptix helps

  • The design comes first, and must stay findable

The bespoke design a structure was built to is recorded against that structure, so the design and the thing it describes stay together for as long as the record exists.

    Handovers and certificates
  • Weather is a live input

Post-weather and post-alteration inspection records sit alongside the routine cycle against the structure, which is what a long-standing sheeted roof actually needs.

    Inspections and adaptations
  • Pricing something you have not built before

Quoting works from the material list the configuration produced against your own sell rates, so an unusual structure is priced from its own arithmetic rather than from a comparable job.

    Estimating and quoting
  • Consent constrains the engineering

Modelling the configuration produces drawings and elevations, which is what a conservation officer or a client's designer can actually look at and respond to.

    3D scaffold design
  • Long-duration structures

Projects and sites hold structures across the whole contract with the squads working them, so a year-long job does not depend on who was there at the start.

Who it is for

The people doing this job

  • Scaffold designers

Producing the design the structure is built to. Not replaceable by software.

    temporary works designer
  • Contracts managers

Holding long-duration structures and the records that outlive the squad.

    temporary roof
  • Supervisors and advanced scaffolders

Building to a design rather than to a compliance sheet.

    bespoke design
  • Scaffold inspectors

Inspecting after weather as a matter of course, not exception.

    7-day inspection
  • Temporary works coordinators

On the client side, holding the design brief and the approvals.

Questions

What temporary roof and heritage work ask

Does ScaffoldOptix design temporary roofs?
No. A temporary roof needs a competent designer and structural calculations, and no software replaces that. ScaffoldOptix models configurations, produces drawings and material lists, and records which design a structure was built to. If a vendor tells you their modelling tool removes the need for a designer, that tells you something about the rest of their claims.
Can we attach the designer's drawings and calculations?
The design a structure was built to is recorded against the structure. Confirm at a demo exactly which file types and documents you can hold, rather than assuming the whole design package has a home here.
Does it account for wind loading?
No. It performs no structural analysis of any kind. Loading is the designer's work; this records what they produced and what was built to it.
Does it handle heritage consent requirements?
No. Consent for work to a protected building is a planning and conservation matter between you, the client and the local authority. Nothing here should be read as addressing it.
Can it hold inspections over a year-long contract?
Inspection records sit against the structure for as long as it stands, including post-weather and post-alteration records, which is what a long-duration structure accumulates most of.
